Freedom, Connection, and the American Spirit

As America marks its 250th anniversary this July and summer bursts forth, we come together with family, friends, and neighbors to enjoy fun fireworks, delicious cookouts, and sunny days. These events remind us that freedom is personal and extends beyond politics.

We all value personal freedom and self-expression, but we also crave belonging and relationships. Healthy families embrace both connection and growth. They foster supportive environments where everyone is valued and free to flourish.

The history of our country reflects a similar tension. America’s strength has often come from people working through differences while continuing to move toward shared ideals of liberty, resilience, and hope.

Perhaps this 250th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate our nation’s past and to reflect on how we can strengthen the relationships and communities around us today. Small acts of kindness, listening, forgiveness, and understanding still help hold families, friendships, and even nations together.

About Thomas K. Swisher, J.D., Ph.D.

As a Family Therapist I help families address and cope with challenges which inevitably arise in family systems and for the children and adults who make up a family. I am an Associate Professor at Stevenson University where I teach courses in "Family Studies" and "Family Therapy". In addition to a Ph.D. in counseling, I have a law degree and I use these two areas to help couples navigate the stormy waters of separation and divorce through MEDIATION and conflict resolution. I have been the lead researcher in studies involving the following variables: "Stress Related Growth", "Satisfaction with Life", "Hope", and"Adaptation to Stress". In addition, I have studied ways in which "Coping", "Spirituality", and "Personality" help individuals adapt to life stressors. I love all the things I do and am passionate about each. Mostly, I am passionate about working directly with individuals and families who are seeking ways to live full, healthy, and happy lives.
